New Zealand Abalone - Paua

Paua (pronounced pah-wah) is a unique species of abalone that is found only in the clean southern coastal waters of New Zealand.

New Zealand Abalone - Paua has a tasty edible flesh that is considered a delicacy in many countries. Of all abalone shell, Paua is the most colourful and is highly iridescent, reflecting blue, green and purple tones.

Quality and good handling is the key through from the environment, diver, manufacturing and marketing to the end user.

On shore the New Zealand Abalone - Paua is shucked of its highly valued meat for further processing, with the shell being made into the unique, high quality tiles by Ocean Shell Ltd.

Each year a limit (quota) is set on the total allowable commercial catch, in order to protect the species. Members of our group work closely with official bodies in New Zealand to ensure this protection is maintained. New Zealand Abalone - Paua can only be harvested by free - diving as the use of breathing apparatus is not permitted.
